Places (outside Germany) to find good, fresh German beer

Postby Roachbrau » Wed Dec 16, 2015 10:05 am

Inspired by the German flavor thread, I figured we could compile a list of restaurants/events where we've found German beers (preferably draft) that were in top shape, comparable quality to what one would experience if drinking the same beer in Germany.

Please list entries in the following format
Country (if outside US) State, City, Name of Venue - beer(s)

If a venue has already been mentioned, quote the previous post and add a +1. I'll update this post with the list, in order of country/state, and number of votes, as it evolves.

US

California
Redwood City, Gourmet House Staudt

Illinois
Moline, Bier Stube -

Indiana
Indianapolis, Edelweiss Restaurant

Iowa
Des Moines, Hessen Haus -

Kentucky
Newport, Hofbräuhaus

Maryland
Hagerstown, Augustoberfest - Hofbräu (helles, oktoberfest, weisse)

Hagerstown, Schmankerl Stube - Bitburger Pils, various

Massachusetts
Boston, Bronwyn - various

Boston, Deep Ellum - Andechs Vollbier Hell, various

Boston, The Glenville Stops - Weihenstephaner Original

SWEDEN

Boston, MA

Bronwyn - Large selection of rotating German beer on draft, always very fresh. Sometimes you'll find weird stuff like grapefruit hefeweizens or gluten free pilsners taking up taps, or they'll have two different doppelbocks on tap but no helles. The food (German) is in my opinion not bad, but a bit overpriced and not very authentic.

Deep Ellum - always has very fresh Andechs Vollbier Hell (or Spezial Hell during the fall) on tap, as well as a rotating pils which is always very good (lately Rothaus Tanenzapfle). Often has a rotating German hefeweizen and some sort of rotating dunkel, marzen, or bock as well. The food is okay here.

The Glenville Stops - always has very fresh Weihenstephaner Original on tap. I like the food a lot here (American gastropub grub), as well as the family that runs it. This place is a bit out of the way but very awesome.

Jacob Wirth - Hofbrau Original, Spaten, and a host of others are always on tap. The food is "German" but I don't care for how they execute it.

We have quite a few good places to get fresh German beer in Boston, but if you want good German food here you need to make it yourself at home.

If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always gotten.

Iowa: Hessen Haus, Des Moines

Illinois:
Bier Stube, Moline

Wisconsin:
Essen Haus, Madison

EDIT: whoops, Essen and Hessen were both listed in the original post. They're definitely note worthy.

Redwood City, California - SF Bay Area.

Gourmet Haus Staudt. It started as a German specialty store, and their son opened a biergarten in the back.

I'd add Frankford Hall (Phila), Bierstube (Phila), Bru (Phila), Hop Angel Brauhaus (Phila) and Hofbrauhaus (Pitt) to the Pennsylvania list.
