Starting to wonder if a 2 roller may be better than a 3 roller for conditioning malt.

Improved mill setup. I can only recommend powering it via a geared motor than a drill. Makes a world of difference.

Yes. It's the Klassic, not the Kompact. Same manufacturer. These are the same as used in the teaching labs at Weihenstephan.

Yes.

I think the monster mills are nice too. It depends what choices one makes and where the emphasis lies. If you can, get a 2 roller with wheels with the biggest diameter as possible.

Conditioning the malt to suppress LOX activity is more important to me than mill specifics though.

A geared motor is a must for those serious about milling. Makes a much ore even crush with less flour than when powered by a drill.

I'm a hand crank miller (I only brew 2.5 gal batches so it's not too much of a workout). I wonder if there are inconsistencies with my crush due to the changing RPMs as I mill. I conditioned the malt for the first time on my last brew and I particularly liked how the grain bed looked after draining the tun. Nice and fluffy. Also much, much less flour. Whether or not it did anything for my beer? Tough to say as I've changed a lot of variables with inclusion of more low oxygen techniques lately.

A 12V motor won't do if you consider the equation at play here (sorry for it being in German)

Leistung P [kw]= Drehzahl n [U/min] * Drehmoment M [Nm] / faktor 9550

Most mills will need 6Nm nominal torque, whereas the startup torque can be anything up to 25Nm. A simple single phase 2 pole motor with a 1:10 gearbox will do much better. If you want the Rolls Royce, then a 3 Phase motor controlled by an Inverter Drive would be the best setup possible.

One thing I noticed is that a motor will produce a much more even crush and substantially less flour. It's definitively a huge improvement for me, but I've managed quite happily without one before.

Note that none of what is being discussed here is a wet milling setup. Wet milling is something else than what is discussed here, dry milling with conditioning would be the accurate terminology.

If one doesn't condition the grain with water of at least 80C, I see very little point in doing so. Then one might just as well mill without conditioning.
