Thanks for all the feedback everyone! Quick update to the planning of the system.

I've landed on using two 120v ULWD elements, 1500 watts. My planned kettle can't fit two 5500W elements to run at 120v, and since the elements are still ULWD I'm not as concerned about scorching or heat stress. Being at 120v, I'll be able to plug them into separate circuits wherever I'm living and shouldn't have an issue. Portable GCFI outlets will be used.

Something mchrispen brought up was that even if I turn off one element, the boil may be too vigorous. I'm planning on using the Auberin SSVR to regulate one of the elements.

So, ultimately, my Single Vessel eBIAB build is looking something like:

- 16 Gallon Kettle w/ false bottom

- Mash lid

- Chugger pump w/ball valve

- (2) 1500W ULWD SS Elements

- PID Controller with a SSVR to regulate the boil

- SS Chiller

- All camlock and triclamp fittings

Pictures to come once more is set up, including a diagram of the wiring for the controller. I have most parts ordered except for the kettle, pump, and controller.

I would suggest it is worth taking your time and measuring your boil off rates over a few test runs. That way you know exactly what to do to hit volumes... and target that 8-9% volume boil off sweet spot. That is my biggest complaint right now about the Brew-Magic. Propane is largely either on or off... I can feather it a bit, but it really takes some careful observation. For the record, full on can cause a 12 gallon batch to leap out of the kettle. Just too much energy!

Indeed. Thermal stress during boil is to be avoided. There is quite a bit more to boiling than meets the eye

@ caedus Will do! I've got plans to make a big write up of the pricing, how to set it all up, etc. Needs to be more budget brewery content out there.

@mchrispen That's actually one of the reasons I stepped away from propane besides the cost of needing to pre-boil (but hey, maybe yeast will solve that problem?). I'm looking forward to dialing this system in.

@Weizenberg Going to need to take your word for it on that one, haven't had a chance to read through those materials yet. Will soon though, and the system will be set up to regulate that regardless.
