Abbreviations and shorthand

Postby Owenbräu » Wed Mar 23, 2016 10:36 am

Here are some common abbreviations we use in discussions:

pima = pilsner malt
vima = vienna malt
muma = munich malt
mema = melanoidin
AM = acid malt
C5 =CF = carafoam
C25 = CH = carahell
C50 =CR=carared
C75=CA=caraamber
C100=CM=caramunich I
C125=CM=caramunich II
C150=CM=caramunich III
M15 = munich + EBC = light munich
M20 = munich + EBC = dark munich
M25 = munich + EBC = dark(er) munich
M50 = melanoidin + EBC (sometimes called muma 50)
CS1 = carafa special 1
CS2 = carafa special 2
CS3 = carafa special 3

We don't talk about abbey (Weyermann, Castle), aromatic (Dingemans) or light munich (Best, Meussdoerfer) malt much, but it would be M40 (ish) since it is a brumalt in between dark munich and melanoidin (dark melanoidin if using Bestmalz). Same with Red X (Best), and it falls around M30. When in doubt, we use the M designation for the brühmalz, then add the EBC.

Any karamalz above CM we just list C and the EBC.

We rarely say carapils (Best, Avanguard, etc), but it would also be C5, or CP.
