Re: DIY Mash Caps
I think your probably out of luck at kettle ID of 17.5" The lid would have to be a listed size of 17 to 17.25" and they jump right over that range. The closest one would be the 15.75" one and after you bent the lip up some to get the draft height you'd be at about 16" OD on the outer enge with 1.5" gap to your pot wall. Maybe better then nothing but not a greasy fit either. Sorry.

Re: DIY Mash Caps
I finally ended up going with a stainless steel 14" x 2" cake pan for my kettle with a diameter of 15 3/8". I'm going to install a bulkhead in it for the wort return.
It's not the perfect fit, but leaves less than 3/4" all around exposed. Hoping that's good enough. Also having a variable wort return should make brewing anything from 5 to 10 gallon batches a cinch.

Scratching my head thinking what could be done with a speidel BM. Don't think the mobdee thread about his modification included anything about a lower mash cap.

Re: DIY Mash Caps
I imagine this idea will be met with horror, but for the super cheap ghetto mash cap, how about plain styrofoam? no foil. Just styrofoam to float on top. In a basic cooler style mash tun, this would be better than nothing surely? I doubt the foam would leach any off flavours at those temps. Ok, now flame me

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ That's what I use, wrapped in foil tape. Here it is, retrofitted with Loc-Line.
