HLT with stirrer okay with lodo ?

Postby adam » Thu Dec 01, 2016 1:13 am

I have a HLT inside a cooler that uses an ice cream stir paddle and motor to stir the water.
Its a slow stir - maybe 60rpm.

Will this enable too much O2 diffusion to be of value for a lodo process ?

Thanks.

You should check out . He doesn't have a cap, and his mash tun stirs (agitates) the mash.

Can you slow it down even more? 1 rpm is enough. The more of a vortex you get the more oxygen will diffuse in. You don't really want a vortex at all, and you don't want to disturb the liquid surface IMO.
If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you've always gotten.

So I timed the stirrer. Its 40 RPM. I've never seen a vortex from it. I have a lid on it to keep the heat in, but there is a headspace to it of an inch when its full. This is good.

Thanks all.

40 RPM should work really well!
