Brody, it's going to depend on your flow rate. There truly is no substitute for actual measurement.

This is the only home brewing forum I know of where people will actually back up what they say with photos of their measurements and specific references to technical brewing books ;)

I use a stone at 1/4l/min flow rate. If bubbles crack the surface, its not going into the wort.

Brody. Of course you can make beer without an DO meter. But if you want to make decent beer its quintessential. You need to nail fermentation for the good stuff. Over or under oxygenating won't get you there. The DO meter is your eyes in what's going on.

Where could I find a reasonably priced DO meter? I am seeing 400-900 bucks to start. As much as I love brewing, its hard to commit to that kind of investment.
