Just I thought I'd throw up some before and after pics of trimming gas posts.

For some reason, pin locks have really long has tubes. That's way too much headspace.

Simple pipe cutter is all you need to remedy this issue.

After that, fill to the rim and get as much liquid under the cap as you can. To me, it's analogous to capping on foam when bottling.

Kobalt brand from Lowe's. Smallest size they sell.

Harbor Freight has them for very cheap.

For the shorter ball lock dip tubes, I use this cute little cutter from Imperial. It's easy to grab the short end of the tube with a needle nose pliers to spin for cutting.

Yup, the dip tube shown above is flat because of a pair of channel locks.

wait, just so I'm clear, the first pic is TOO much headspace? It doesn't even seem like there is enough room to fit the lid in there?

I didn't think headspace was a big issue in the spunding kegs, since they were purged and yeast was present?

Transferring beer this way, you'll still pick up 0.4-0.5 ppm of DO. Increased headspace (pic with the long gas post) will get you more. It's your call what you do.

I am not sure it's that important for secondary since the yeast is capable scavenging the oxygen. Arguably one doesn't want too much oxygen in there, but I never felt it was necessary to shorten the inlets for this reason.

What is far more annoying is that these tubes begin to touch the liquid earlier -- which is annoying to say the least and a great reason for me to do the work.
