Most of it was the shipping and the other half was shipment documents, which they said were required shipping outside of the EU.

Ok. Its established then that shipping costs to the US are prohibitively high, mainly due to (understandable) restrictions. The yeast is actually a really strong fermenter (big bubbles). Never seen that on any of the other candidates (WLP820,830, WY2124).

Judging from the smell i would identify WY2124 as the closest match. Don't hold your breath though. The proof is in the pudding.

How's 34/70 been treating you? I just picked up just shy of a liter of thick slurry from a local brew pub. Thinking about replacing my current 833 with it.

It's all about personal preferences. W34/70 is quite universal and found in most German beers. My impressions are that I would neither place it as W830 or W820 - but that's a very superficial statement because I haven't done enough with it. The service from Weihenstephan was flawless and the viability extraordinary.

High on my list are W105 and W109 too.

If I were in the US I would order the WLP835 (I don't know the equivalent in Weihenstephan).

Yea 835 seems to need enough orders to ship, think I'm going to throw 4 vials on the queue though.

Futur - I'm not sure the original source, just that it's 34/70 (they recently switched from a Czech strain). Being able to obtain a large quantity of it fresh and free is always nice. There lagers are very clean.

I have had correspondences with WL, and they claim their lager strains are from the Saaz group. They suggest that few use the Froelich strains, however, W34 (both 70 &78) are confirmed Froelich strains. Something seems amiss, as I find it odd that WL doesn't produce the W34/70 strain.
