Cutting Dip Tubes?
Hey Guys,
so I brewed a great Helles, just kegged it this morning to go down into lagering, and I got to thinking about how to mitigate yeast pick up.
Does anyone here cut their diptubes for their beer pickup? Mine goes all the way to the bottom, and if we are transferring with a large amount of cells in suspension there will be sedimentation. I am just curious how everyone else seems to be doing on this front, because my pick up tubes lack the ability to suck all the yeast trub out, so I just get "dirty" beer if I have sedimentation in the keg.

Re: Cutting Dip Tubes?
My fermentation keg's (5 gal) liquid dip tube is cut 2" short, so I get clear beer when I rack.
All of my gas dip tubes are cut flush with the top wall of the keg so I can fill 100%
None of my serving kegs (3 gal) have cut liquid dip tubes
You can use a small pipe cutter to do the job cleanly. Just be sure to repassivate the stainless after cutting it.

I have done it before. How high are your dip tubes from the bottom in your serving kegs?
I have some kegs with a quarter sized divet in the center of the base and the dip tube sits all the way down in there. Any sediment will get drawn out over the course of serving the keg.
I have others that serve from the side of the keg, an sit a centimeter or so above the base, uncut

Re: Cutting Dip Tubes?
I do not cut my liquid tubes. My gas tubes are cut flush like Tech's.

Mine have the divet. The beer is initially cloudy but clears up pretty fast.
You can cut them by 1cm or so if you're getting too much sediment and it should work

If you umdrucken, then by the time you flush the lines it will be running clear.

Could you clarify umdrucken for me? Its just transferring right? I usually transfer into the keg with some extract left.

Re: Cutting Dip Tubes?
I cut all my dip tubes 1/2" shorter. The gas tubes are shortened up making it easy to fully fill the keg with DO water/starsan and push out with CO2.
