I don't think so up to a point. I think the shaker pint should be banned, but beyond that. I don't think it matter much. I pretty much drink all my beer out of a stange. Infact this is the helles I literally just poured. Prost.

I think the shape of the glass can definitely change the perception. I use a pilsner glass for pretty much everything, but I'm drinking helles or pils 90% of the time anyway. I like a mug or maß for maltier beers, or when I'm feeling froggy

"Do you need the proper glass to drink X beverage?" No. You can drink out of anything; a mug, a pilsner, a viking horn, an old leather boot.
"Does the proper glass to drink X beverage enhance the experience?" IMO - yes. I think a good dimple mug is perfect for a big malty lager. I think a pilsner glass is great for a hoppier beer as it funnels the aromas upwards. Is there any science behind that? I think/thought there was.

Honestly though - I like to try and match the glass to the style. It's like eating Asian cuisine with chopsticks. It's how it's "meant" to be eaten, but I'm not about to tell everyone they can't use a fork or knife. It all adds. Do you want to eat a properly grilled and seasoned steak on a paper plate with a plastic fork and knife?
