Corollary: if you notice that your favorite German lager exhibits the stale honey flavor when you get an old/stale/abused bottle, it's a good clue that the original grist included some carahell.

Yes, this was definitely the old, unpleasant kind of honey. Augustiner and Tegerensee are two of my favorites, normally, so it was likely a packaging/age issue.
