If you go too fast then your extraction rate will suffer.

Bryan recirculates, and does a no-sparge, albeit at the cost of much lower extraction efficiency (which is not necessarily a bad thing).
I do the boring German decoctions and step mashes on a 4 vessel system and my sparge system currently gets an overhaul so I can do it faster.
The total lauter time in a German brewery is often 120 minutes. I would not go under 90 minutes, but you can make your own conclusions.
